Therapy is a collaborative process that works best when sessions are held on a consistent basis. A counseling session usually lasts 50 minutes. During sessions, you talk about the primary concerns and issues in your life. I understand that it can be difficult to share personal things with a person that you just met, and if you want to wait to discuss certain things until you feel more comfortable, you have the rights to do so. The first few sessions are a part of the assessment period. I will ask you questions about the things that brought you into therapy, what kinds of stressors you are experiencing, and some general background information. If you have any concerns about the therapy process, please let me know. The first few sessions are an opportunity for us to get to know each other and to establish what goals we will be working towards together. After the assessment period, we will start working towards your goals and will start implementing various interventions. There is no specific blueprint or formula that we use and the direction we take will be based on your individual needs. For therapy to be most effective you must be an active participant, both during and between the sessions. Weekly sessions are usually best but some people who are in crisis or extreme distress need more than one session per week until the crisis passes. During the time between sessions it is beneficial to think about and process what was discussed.
