FAQ's

"What can I expect in a therapy session?"

Therapy is a collaborative process that works best when sessions are held on a consistent basis. A counseling session usually lasts 50 minutes. During sessions, you talk about the primary concerns and issues in your life. I understand that it can be difficult to share personal things with a person that you just met, and if you want to wait to discuss certain things until you feel more comfortable, you have the rights to do so. The first few sessions are a part of the assessment period. I will ask you questions about the things that brought you into therapy, what kinds of stressors you are experiencing, and some general background information. If you have any concerns about the therapy process, please let me know. The first few sessions are an opportunity for us to get to know each other and to establish what goals we will be working towards together. After the assessment period, we will start working towards your goals and will start implementing various interventions. There is no specific blueprint or formula that we use and the direction we take will be based on your individual needs. For therapy to be most effective you must be an active participant, both during and between the sessions. Weekly sessions are usually best but some people who are in crisis or extreme distress need more than one session per week until the crisis passes. During the time between sessions it is beneficial to think about and process what was discussed.

"Is therapy confidential?"

In general, the law protects the confidentiality of all communications between a client and a psychotherapist. Information is not disclosed without written permission. However, there are a few expectations to this rule.

Exceptions include:

~  Suspected Child abuse or dependent adult or elder abuse. I am required by law to report this to the appropriate authorities immediately.

~  If a client is threatening serious bodily harm to another person/s. I must notify the police and inform the intended victim.

~  If a client intends to harm himself or herself, I will make every effort to enlist your cooperation in insuring your safety. If you do not cooperate, further measures may be taken without your permission in order to ensure your safety.
